Drowning Victim Recovered

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that around 8 pm last evening, the Sheriff’s Office Regional Water Rescue Unit was called to assist on a report of a possible drowning in the Great Miami River Canal behind the 800 block of Joe Nuxhall (aka Ford) Boulevard near the border of the City of Hamilton and St. Clair Township. Three juveniles (2 male and 1 female) had been fishing at the canal and had decided to swim across the water. One male made it to the other side. The second male began struggling about half-way across, and the female, also began struggling and started to be carried downstream. The female was able to grab a tree limb, and clung to it until she was able to be rescued by a Hamilton Fire Department rescue team. The first male swam back to assist his friend, but was unable to save him before he disappeared into the water. All water rescue teams were joined by the Sheriff’s Office helicopter in attempts to find and rescue that male.

Prior to the arrival of the divers, the Regional Water Rescue Unit’s advanced sonar equipment was able to locate the victim. Approximately 11:45 pm, Sheriff’s Units were able to recover the body of 15-year-old William Allen, from Hamilton. Sheriff Jones was saddened by the outcome of this event. “This is tragic,” said the Sheriff. “I know that canal well, having grown up in Hamilton’s North End. As a kid, I swam and canoed right there where this happened. I guess I was lucky that something like this didn’t happen back then. This is a very sad reminder that rivers and waterways really are not meant to be play areas.”
