Sheriff Urges Opposition For Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones advised that in June of 2013 the National Sheriff’s Association adopted a comprehensive immigration reform platform to oppose amnesty for those who are in our country illegally. The Sheriff sent letters today to President Barack Obama, Congressman John Boehner and Senator Harry Reid urging them to do the same.

The National Sheriff’s Association (NSA) is one of the largest associations of law enforcement professionals in the United States with more than 20,000 members.  It is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the level of professionalism among sheriffs, their deputies and others in the field of criminal justice.

In his letters, Sheriff Jones re-states his position that securing the nation’s border absolutely has to be the first step in any immigration reform.  “Failure to secure our nation’s border first will only result in yet another failed immigration plan. I have physically been to our southern border and I can assure you it is nothing more than a line on the map.  “Until the border is secured this will continue to be a growing problem for our country,” Sheriff Jones said.

Sheriff Jones said “I believe it is time to stop wasting time with plans that do not work.  This is a growing problem that continues to be ignored by our national leaders. Band-Aids only temporarily cover a wound.”  There is a plan in place for at least 200 Sheriffs to go to the Capitol so their concerns will be heard. “Protection of our borders and homeland security is a priority for every sheriff in the United States, and it should be a priority for the leaders of our country,” said the Sheriff.  The letters were sent out today.
