Sheriff Richard K. Jones sadly reports that K-9 Deputy “Falco” had to be euthanized yesterday.  Falco, an 8 year old Belgian Malinois, served with his handler Deputy Daron Rhoads at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office for the last 6 ½ years. “He was a dedicated member of our agency and will be missed,” Sheriff Jones said.

Falco suffered a number of medical issues which caused him to be in pain. The decision to retire him from service was difficult – the decision to say goodbye was much harder. Dr. Susanna Hinkle Schwartz of MedVet Cincinnati worked diligently to improve Falco’s health and prolong his life, but his spinal issues were too extensive for him to live pain free. The Sheriff’s Office is deeply indebted to Dr. Schwartz for the special attention and compassion she gave to Falco.

Falco was trained in several aspects of K-9 law enforcement to include tracking, apprehension and narcotics detection.  He is credited with assisting in several felony arrests and successful drug discoveries during his career.

In 2010, for example, Deputy Falco successfully assisted his handler during a traffic stop on I-75.  A subject wanted for murder out of Dade County Florida armed with a loaded handgun was taken into custody without incident. “I believe his presence saved my life,” Deputy Rhoads said. “In fact, I believe Falco may have saved my life numerous times and I didn’t even realize it.  He had a kind disposition with a strong presence and never had to put his teeth on anyone.  I gave two chances to comply, and with Falco there, that’s all it took.”
