HAMILTON, OH – Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that, beginning this month, there will be increased testing of weather warning systems in some parts of Butler County.

Presently, sirens are tested using the standard three-minute cycle on the first Wednesday of each month at noon, as long as weather conditions are clear. If a problem is found with a weather siren and a maintenance crew attempts to resolve it, a whole month may pass before the next test can verify the siren is functioning normally again. For this reason, Sheriff Jones has directed his staff to conduct additional tests each Wednesday at noon when the weather is clear.

On these additional Wednesdays at noon, the Sheriff’s staff may conduct short “growl” tests or rotational tests for sirens in particular areas. During a growl test, a siren makes sound for less than 30 seconds. During a rotation-only test, the siren rotates without making any sound.

“The important thing for the public to understand is that if a weather warning siren makes sound on any Wednesday at noon and the weather is clear, there is no cause for alarm,” Sheriff Jones said. “With increased testing, we’ll have a more reliable system and a safer Butler County.”
