Subject In Custody After Pulling BB Gun On Deputy

Mel TittleButler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that on Sunday evening around midnight, deputies were dispatched to Thorton’s in New Miami for two disorderly subjects, one of whom was displaying a gun.

When Deputy Brown arrived on scene, the suspect, Mel Tittle 50 year old male, was in front of the store and began walking away toward the back. Deputy Brown asked him to show his hands and Mr. Tittle pulled a firearm from a holster on his hip and continued behind a propane exchange and ice machine.  After several commands, he threw the gun on the ground and shouted that he had done nothing wrong.

After Mr. Tittle was in custody, it was discovered he was also in possession of brass knuckles.  The gun was a very realistic looking BB gun. He was charged with tampering with evidence, an aggravated felony, as well as carrying concealed weapons, inducing panic and disorderly conduct, all misdemeanor charges.

“That outcome could have been a lot different,” Sheriff Jones said. “This is the kind of stuff we are faced with every single day.  This deputy showed some amazing restraint in this situation and didn’t have to.  Mr. Tittle certainly didn’t let my deputy know it was a BB gun, and it doesn’t look like one either.  I am pleased Deputy Brown went home and more pleased Mr. Tittle is in the Butler County Jail where he should be.”

The store employee stated that Mr. Tittle was lifting his shirt up and showing everyone he had a gun and pointed it at the employee while it was still holstered.  The other subject, John Tittle, 60 year old male was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor of the 4th degree.
