One
of the most critical functions of the Butler County sheriff’s Office is to
maintain the “Property Room”. Duties include the acceptance and tracking
of
property submitted by officer into the Property Room. Once a piece of property
is accepted, it is the responsibility of the Deputy in charge to keep accurate
records of the exact location of the property until a disposition of the
property is achieved.
The types of property inside the Property / Evidence Room vary greatly. They may be a license plate lost and found on the side of the road or drugs that were purchased by undercover officers or money seized from a drug dealer. There may even be weapons and bloody evidence used in a homicide.
Most
property is submitted by officers as evidence to be used in a Court of Law
against a defendant. Some items in the Property / Evidence Room may be in
there for years. In 2004, The Property Room Deputy took in approximately 1300
items, not including the number of items stored from previous years.
The Property / Evidence Room utilizes the VisionAir Records Management system for log and keep track of each and every item taken in and out. This Deputy is often called upon to testify in court and bring documentation on specific items that were submitted into the Property / Evidence Room.
