The Butler
County K-9 Unit and their handlers are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The
K-9 teams are a great asset for patrolling the streets of Butler County.
Suspects that commit crimes and try to hide or attempt to transport or sell
narcotics are well aware of the K-9’s ability to locate and end their activity,
whether in a back alley, wooded lot or a vehicle.
The K-9 Teams are able to:
Track and find wanted criminals or missing persons in urban, rural or rugged wooded areas
Search all types of buildings for criminals in hiding
Search for evidence or property connected to a crime
Search for illegal drugs that have been hidden
Chase and apprehend criminals escaping arrest who may be armed and dangerous
Act as a deterrent and back up in dangerous situations, such as fights, riots and disturbances
To provide high profile foot patrols of places, such as schools, shopping complexes and parks
The
Butler County Sheriff’s Office current K-9 Unit consists of two 92) new K-9
dogs, Ammo and Dex. Both dogs are Belgian Malinois, originating in Malines,
Belgium.
This is a new breed of patrol dog with the Sheriff’s Office. The Malinois is a
more athletic K-9 and are known for their excellent speed and bite work. The
Malinois is a HIGH drive K-9 that are all business. In the Fall of 2005, The
Sheriff’s Office will obtain another K-9 Unit Dog that will complete the K-9
rotation.
