Concealed Carry License Applicants

The following information is current as of 10/17/2009

Effective October 17, 2009 fee amounts related to Concealed Carry Licenses have changed. Read below for new fee amounts. ONLY Money Orders / Bank Checks for the correct amount will be accepted.

Effective February 1, 2009, all applicants will need to schedule an appointment to apply for their CCW License. Please call or leave a message at 513-785-1020 to schedule an appointment. Due to the high number of license requests it may take several days to be called, but you will be contacted as soon as possible.

For Original, First-time, license

For a Renewal Application, if original application filed through Butler County

 For a renewal Application if original issued by another County

    Ohio law requires you to notify the Sheriff's Office at which you obtained your concealed carry license within 45 days after a change of address.  Address changes sent by email are not accepted!

This process, required by law, modifies the record held by our agency in the event you need to be contacted regarding suspension, revocation, or administrative purpose.

If you wish to obtain a replacement, concealed handgun license displaying your new address, you must call 513-785-1020 for an appointment and apply in person. The cost is $15.00 - (For modifying record in CHL computer with new address, printing replacement license, and entering new address information in law enforcement computer)

A money order or official bank check (cash and/or personal checks are not accepted) already completed and made payable to “Treasurer of Butler County” for $15.00.

Renewal CompetencyTraining Requirements

Your Initial Competency is valid for (6) years. If you wish to remain current, you may attend an update course presented by an approved instructor. If your training expires and you wish to renew your Ohio CCW License:

  A.    You must attend a (4 – 8) hour Certified Competency Course.

B.   Training must be given by a Certified NRA instructor and or a current Ohio Peace Officer Training Instructor.

C.    Instructors must be certified in the instruction of (handguns).

1.    Prescribed under ORC 2923.125 (G)(2)(b). The course will include physical demonstration of competency

2.    Written examination will be administered

a.    Be able to demonstrate and pass competency in the use of (handgun)

b.    And pass written test as given by certified instructor

D.   As part of the Renewal Process: You must verify that you have re-read the most current CCW handbook, which has been revised to reflect changes in the CCW law.

Once Competency course is complete, Applicant may re-apply for CCW license anytime 90 days prior to expiration and 30 days after expiration. As of April 1, 2008, license will then be good for 5 years from date of issue. If your CCW license (expires) for more than (120) days ,  applicant will then have to re-apply as a new applicant. If you have already renewed your CCW license under your original certificate, the above only applies for second renewals.
