 Job Descriptions

Corrections Officers are responsible for the safety and security of inmates housed in the Butler County Jail or at the Minimum Security Resolutions Jail.  Each officer manages the day-to-day activities of the inmates within their assigned dorm/block, maintains a safe living environment for the inmates, and may be called upon to assist with inmate intakes/releases.  Each new officer will receive 160 hours of training with an experienced officer.  Within the first year of hire, the officer will be required to complete the Basic Corrections Officer Training.   

Deputy Sheriff  positions that become available at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office are generally filled by promotion from the rank of Corrections Officer, but outside applications are accepted and will be reviewed based on training and experience.  Applicants must be certified as Peace Officers through the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council prior to appointment.   

Dispatcher positions play a very significant role within the Sheriff’s Office.  He/she fields calls from the community, including Emergency 911 calls, and must determine which police, fire, or EMS agency is to be dispatched. Dispatchers deal with citizens in a heightened emotional state and are often the first contact they have with the Sheriff’s Office.  They play a crucial role in officer safety. Other duties include maintaining the master file of warrants, domestic violence actions, and temporary protection orders, running LEADS and NCIC checks and entering data in the computer.   

Paramedics provide basic health care and emergency medical treatment for the inmates housed in the Jail and Resolutions.  Applicants are required to have their Ohio State Paramedic License and CPR/ACLS certification. Two years experience as a paramedic is preferred, but not required. Most medic positions are part-time positions.  Newly hired medics must attend a 40 hour Routine Prisoner Contact Training within their first year of employment.

Special Deputy  are individuals who volunteers a minimum of 16 hours per month with the Sheriff’s Office.  A special deputy must be certified as a Peace Officer through the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council prior to appointment.  The individual will commit to work 8 hours in the jail and 8 hours with the Patrol Division each month.  Individuals wishing to apply for the position of special deputy will be required to go through the same stringent hiring process required of all staff. 

Clerical specialists are assigned to the various divisions within the Sheriff’s Office.  Computer skills are required for this position since their primary duty is data entry.  Knowledge of the criminal justice system and familiarity with court documents, although not required, would be beneficial.

Providing the position applied for is open and the candidate meets initial criteria an application will be sent to the candidate. 

The first phase of the hiring process requires that the application be completed in its entirety.  Resumes may accompany the application but may not be substituted for any part it.  The application is reviewed for completeness, legibility, grammar/spelling, and content.   

Completed applications will be forwarded to the background investigator who will contact the applicant to schedule an Initial Interview.  An Initial Investigative Interview Worksheet will be sent to the applicant along with a letter confirming the date and time of the interview.  The applicant is expected to bring the completed worksheet and all the required copies of documents to the interview.  During the interview, the applicant will sign several release forms which will allow the Sheriff’s Office to proceed with the background investigation. 

The background investigation will be performed in a thorough and confidential manner to ensure accurate and fair results for both the applicant and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.    During this phase of the process, the investigator will check the applicant’s driving record, criminal history, arrest record, military background and credit history.  Listed references and employers are contacted.  The investigator will also develop other contacts during this phase in order to get an unbiased picture of the applicant.  The investigator will visit the applicant at his/her home and interview family members present to determine what support system exists.  Neighbors will also be interviewed. 

Applicants who have successfully completed the background investigation will be scheduled to go before the Oral Review Panel.  The panel consists of 3-5 administrative staff.  The members of the panel will be given an opportunity to review the applicant’s file and to ask questions of the applicant.  After all interviews are finished, the panel will determine which candidates will continue in the process. Successful candidates will proceed to a drug screen, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, physical examination and physical agility test.  

Candidates who have successfully completed the hiring process will be placed on a hiring list. Positions are filled from this list and candidates are typically hired based on training, education and experience. New hires are placed on a one year probationary period, during which time they will be trained in the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their assignment.  Periodic evaluations will be conducted to ensure that they are learning these skills.  Employees who successfully complete their probationary period are launched into an exciting career with many advancement opportunities at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office!
