"What does Level 2 Snow Advisory mean??!!"

If you have ever asked this question, then this page is for you! It has been brought to our attention that people hear Snow Advisory information such as "There is a Level 2 Snow Advisory in effect..." and don't know specifically what it  means!

This page will hopefully answer this question. This system of classifying Winter road conditions was created in 1986 giving Ohio Sheriff's the authority to declare restrictions on the use of roadways in their respective counties during certain Winter weather conditions.

It was presented officially as follows:

Pursuant to Ohio Attorney General Opinion 86-023, the Sheriff of a county may declare a snow advisory and temporarily close county and township roads within his jurisdiction for the preservation of the public peace.

In order to avoid confusion as to what a "snow advisory" actually means, the following "levels" were established as a guideline when such a declaration is made:

 LEVEL 0

There is no snow advisory in effect.

 LEVEL 1

Roadways are hazardous. Motorists are urged to drive very cautiously.

LEVEL 2

Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads can be very icy. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roadways. People should contact their employer to see If they should report to work. Obviously, if you are driving, use extreme caution.

LEVEL 3

All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during this condition unless it is absolutely necessary or a personal emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report for work. Anyone traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest.

Remember, it's impossible to know the condition of EVERY road in the county. These are only guidelines for the majority of roads. For example if the Advisory Level is set at 1, there may possibly be secondary roads that could be rated at level 2 or even possibly Level 3!

If there is snow present, you should always assume that the road ahead is worse than the stretch of road you are currently on. In short, drive with extra regard for your speed and those around you especially on curves, hills, and the bridges which usually freeze well before the rest of the roadway. Also give yourself PLENTY of stopping distance especially on icy roads.
