For Immediate Release . . . August 8, 2007
Butler County Sheriff’s Office to Open the Old Jail Today . . .
Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones, with the support of the Butler County Commissioners, and the assistance of Kathy Becker, coordinator of Homeless Outreach, will be making the renovated Court Street Jail Facility available as a cooling center for senior citizens. The facility, which is located at 123 Court Street in downtown Hamilton, has been renovated to house future inmates of the Butler County Jail. “It is times like these that we need to use our resources to help others,” said Sheriff Jones. “The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the area, with temperatures expected to reach 100 degrees today. This is a dangerous time for people, especially our senior citizens. We have a facility that is ready for occupancy, but is not yet being used, and we want to make it available for those who have no other means of keeping cool,” the Sheriff added.
The Sheriff will be making the first floor of the renovated facility available to those seniors who need to get out of the heat. “We can accommodate up to15 people at this time. They will be provided with a place to sleep, fresh water, and working bathroom facilities. My staff will see to it that sandwiches and drinks are brought in as well,” stated Sheriff Jones. There will be transportation available to those who need it. Interested persons can contact Lt. Marian Olivas at 513-785-1300.
