Extra Patrols Planned for “St. Patrick’s Day” Weekend, and Beyond
Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones announces an increased Deputy patrol presence for “St. Patrick’s Day” weekend, March 14-16, 2008, and continuing through Monday (St. Patrick’s Day), March 17. Approximately 50 additional man hours will be logged over and above regular routine patrol duties, using grant money from the State of Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Special Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.). These Deputies will be targeting alcohol (or drug) impaired drivers, and other traffic law violators, and will concentrate patrols in local area neighborhoods as well as major thoroughfares.
The main goal of the extra patrols is to help keep our roadways safe during what is historically a celebratory and party-going time. Those planning to participate in such activities are encouraged to travel with a non-drinking designated driver. While catching traffic law violators is certainly a function of the patrols, it is hoped that the increased visibility of patrol Deputies will also serve as a deterrent to those who might otherwise speed or not pay attention to traffic signs/lights.
Extra Patrols will then continue under the same S.T.E.P. grant program from March 18 through the end of April. The main focus of those patrols, expected to log another additional 60 man-hours, will be speed limit enforcement throughout the unincorporated areas of Butler County.
