Sheriff Goes Green
Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones announces a new cardboard recycling program has been launched at the Butler County Jail. The Butler County Department of Environmental Services (BCDES) has recently installed a special compactor at the jail that is planned to recycle an estimated 40-50 tons of corrugated cardboard in the first year of its operation. Inmate labor will be used to collect and separate the cardboard from jail foodservice operations and prisoner housing units, as well as administrative office areas. The Butler County Engineer’s Office provided support to the program with surveying and planning efforts for the compactor.
“This project has been a joint effort with the Department of Environmental Services with additional help from Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens’ Office for the good of the environment,” said Sheriff Richard K. Jones. “I’m told it may reduce our trash removal costs by as much as 20-30%. The potential financial rewards are nice, but the environmental impact is the real reason to do this. It makes sense to recycle all this cardboard, and it’s the right thing to do.”
