Sheriff Warns Citizens of Chemical Bomb Dangers

A series of incidents involving chemical reaction bombs has prompted Sheriff Richard K. Jones to issue a warning to citizens about their dangers. In two separate Liberty Township incidents, residents found chemical bombs which resulted in property damage and posed inherent physical dangers to the finders.

In the first incident, a caller found 6 chemical bombs near 5212 Aspen Valley Drive and collected them as discarded trash on Sunday and fortunately did not sustain any chemical burns. On Monday, she heard an explosion and went to the area to investigate. She found an additional chemical bomb that had functioned and brought it home. While attempting to show her husband, she dripped the contents on her carpet, leaving a burn trail on her carpet, from doorway across the living room.

A second incident was at 5279 Aspen Valley Drive occurring Thursday morning (April 10th). A resident found a chemical bomb lying in his driveway and attempted to kick it to the curb line. After kicking the device, it exploded, spraying him with its acidic contents. Fortunately he was not injured but his driveway and boots sustained damage.

Chemical bombs are usually made in plastic soda or water bottles. These bottles can hold upwards of 150 psi. Pressure is generated inside the bottles by reacting an acid or base with a metal in most cases. This reaction generates heat, hydrogen gas, and builds up pressure until the bottle bursts or explodes. This explosion sends the acidic contents and shards of plastic out in every direction, potentially striking anyone in the immediate proximity (up to 10 feet by our testing). Several of the devices recovered by the Sheriff’s Bomb Squad in the Liberty Township incidents were wrapped with duct tape.

Sheriff Jones cautions residents that upon finding plastic soda bottles that appear unusual; err on the side of caution and call the Sheriff’s Office or your local police agency and get the suspected item evaluated. Even though these incidents were in Liberty Township, similar incidents occur throughout the county.

The Sheriff’s Office is actively reviewing forensic evidence collected in this last series of incidents to identify suspects. “Any suspect identified will be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible,” said Sheriff Jones.
