State Auditor Yost meets with Sheriff Jones

State Auditor Dave Yost and Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones met today to discuss new tools that will help state and local law enforcement team up to fight economic crimes and public corruption.

Yost, a former prosecuting attorney, conferred with Sheriff Jones at the Sheriff’s office following a stop at the Butler County Fair. He told the Sheriff that a member of the Auditor’s Special Investigations Unit is now trained in computer forensics, and is available to work with local law enforcement, such as sheriffs, on appropriate investigations.

The computer forensics capability adds to the other investigative support the Auditor of State can provide, such as forensic accounting, Yost said.

Sheriff Jones welcomed the opportunity to have the additional resources available to solve crimes involving computers. “We live in a society where everyone uses technology. A lot of criminal activity is conducted using computers or information about the crime is stored in computers,” said the Sheriff. “In most cases, it can take several months to get the information back from a lab for any type of results that would be important to law enforcement. If you’ve got a public official doing wrong, you don’t want to have to wait to make it right,” he continued. He commended Yost on his leadership and summarized their meeting in saying, “An old prosecutor knows what a sheriff needs.”
