The Law

Registration

In the State of Ohio, sex offenders are required to be classified by their individual sentencing judge into one of three categories, or tiers. The laws for the offender registration process have changed several times since the original inception of the registration process, but the main concept has remained the same – different categories have different registration and notification requirements.

Currently, those requirements range from registering once a year for ten years with no notification sent to neighbors / schools (for the lowest level offenders) to registering every 90 days for life and the sending of written notification to neighbors / schools within a 1,000 foot radius of the offender’s residence (for the highest level offenders). In addition, highest level offenders are generally restricted from living within 1,000 feet of schools and registered day cares / pre-schools, providing their offense occurred after July 31, 2003.

For answers to specific questions regarding the registration and notification process, you are encouraged to call our SORN unit at (513) 785-1246 or (513) 785-1277 to speak directly with a Deputy Sheriff assigned to SORN.

The SORN unit works closely with local police departments, other Sheriff’s Offices, Probation, Parole and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations, as well as the US Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agencies in attempts to ensure sex offenders comply with their registration requirements.

Tips from the General Public

We rely on tips from the general public, either via our website or through the Attorney General website, or Offender Watch website, to aid us in tracking sex offenders and/or prosecuting those who fail to register properly. “Tipsters” can always remain anonymous, but in order to obtain as much information as possible and to seek criminal indictments against offenders, it is always important for a “tipster” to leave a contact number where we can clarify information or inquire further into the case.

Submit a crime tip through our website.
