Sheriff’s Office Subpoened on Sunday Regarding Prisoner Voting Rights Court Challenge Filed Against Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that his office received a subpoena today (Sunday, October 21), requiring attendance in Federal Court on Tuesday. Butler County Jail Warden, Lt. Nick Fisher was served with the subpoena at his personal residence this morning. He has been ordered to appear Tuesday in United States Federal Court, Ohio Southern District, Cincinnati, and testify in a case titled “Fair Elections Ohio et al v. Husted et al.” It appears the case is a challenge to current Ohio rulings/procedures that dictate how prisoners are allowed to vote.

“It seems this is becoming the year of challenges geared toward making sure everyone gets a chance to vote,” said Sheriff Jones. “We currently comply with existing Ohio law, and try to ensure that eligible prisoners in my jail do get to cast their ballot. We basically take our direction from the Butler County Board of Elections, who actually send representatives into the jail to allow prisoner voting to be conducted on-site. I guess there are some that feel the ‘system’ doesn’t do enough. It’s well known that Ohio is considered a critical swing state, so it’s natural that some will want to fight for any possible vote they can get. It may be the American way, but wow…fighting for prisoner votes! If Ohio does become the deciding state, who would ever have imagined that the outcome of this year’s Presidential election could possibly be determined by the votes of Ohio jail prisoners — only in America!” said the Sheriff.
