It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Deputy Sheriff Ben Ballinger after he fought a courageous three-year battle against cancer.

Ben joined the Butler County Sheriff’s Office in 1996 as a Special Deputy Sheriff. He began working part-time in Court Security in 1997 and full-time in 1998.

Bike PatrolHis career at the Sheriff’s Office included time on the bike patrol, working in the Transportation unit, assisting with K9 training, and advising in the Explorers youth program.

In addition, Ben was instrumental in starting the Sheriff’s Office Caisson unit. The unit was established to honor those fallen members and families of the law enforcement community as well as those in military service, or distinguished community members. “He worked on the care and cleaning of the caisson, too. He laid many soldiers and officers to rest; tomorrow we will use it for Deputy Ballinger,” Sheriff Jones said.

Ben also volunteered with the Respect for Law Camp – a youth program sponsored by the Butler County Police Chiefs Association – for eight years. The camp, which will hold it’s 20th session this summer, teaches kids ages 11 to 14 about the law and law enforcement in an action-packed weekend. He led a platoon each of those years, and was a great mentor and leader for the kids.
