Female Sentenced for Having Sex with Juvenile Detainees in 2011

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that Amber M. Harris, age 34, of Fairfield was sentenced to 90 days in jail today after pleading guilty to 2 counts of Unlawful Sexual Conduct with a Minor and 1 count of Sexual Battery in Butler County Common Pleas Court. After completion of the 90-day sentence, Harris will be required to complete a SAMI (Substance Abuse Mentally Ill) program, and then be subjected to 5 years probation. She also will have to register as a Tier 3 sex offender for the rest of her life. Some of the incidents occurred in 2011 while Harris was employed as an intermittent part-time youth leader with the Butler County Juvenile Rehabilitation Center. Three male victims who were ages 15 (2 of them) and 16 at the time, were being held at the Butler County Juvenile Rehabilitation Center when the incidents occurred.

They immediately reported the information to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, and an investigation began. Harris reportedly cooperated with that investigation. She had also been employed part-time in 2011 with St. Aloysius Cambridge School, Dixie Highway, Hamilton, where additional victims were identified. Before the case could be presented directly to a Grand Jury for possible indictment, she plead to a “Bill of Information” through the Butler County Courts, which led to today’s sentencing.

Public Service Announcement: Joint Scam Investigation

The offices of Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones and Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser have launched a joint investigation into a scam that has targeted at least one elderly Butler County resident. The “lucky target” was told he had won a new Mercedes vehicle and $3.5 million dollars cash, and all he had to do was to pay the taxes on the vehicle. Although not willing to pay those taxes, the victim did provide the scammer with his address. At that point, additional high-pressure phone tactics were used to convince the victim he needed to purchase some pre-paid phones and about $4,000 of pre-paid debit cards, all of which were mailed to a Florida address. Apparently knowing there was a “good target,” the scammer then sent a check for $5,000 (believed to be bogus) to his victim, who was instructed to deposit the money in his bank account, and then use it to buy more pre-paid debit cards to be shipped to Florida. The scammer also indicated that he would be sending a taxi cab to the victim’s house to check up on him. About two weeks later, a taxi did arrive at the victim’s house. It has been determined that the call to the local taxi company originated from Chicago, IL.

“Only the ‘lowest of the low’ pick on elderly victims,” said Sheriff Jones. “Everyone needs to understand that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” he continued. “Don’t send off your hard-earned money to anyone you don’t know.” Prosecutor Gmoser is equally angered with these types of scams, and has vowed to provide whatever support he and his office can provide to get those responsible brought to justice.

Sheriff’s Office Recovers Massive Amount of Stolen Property from Multiple Jurisdictions

Butler County Sheriff Richard K Jones announces the recovery of personal property from at least 100 to possibly 150 or more recent car break- ins scattered throughout the Southwest Ohio area.  A tip from a citizen helped the Butler County Sheriff’s Office launch a week-long investigation that culminated in yesterday’s arrest of two (2) male juveniles and an adult female.   That investigation resulted in recovering property believed to have been stolen from West Chester, Oxford, and Liberty Township areas in Butler County, as well as the cities of Mason, Carlisle, Franklin, Madeira, Cleves, and Colerain Township in Southwest Ohio.  Those law enforcement agencies have been contacted and are working with Butler County investigators to help identify and match stolen property to the victims.  Property recovered included items such as cell phones, wallets, purses, credit cards, handguns, cameras, Garmins, iPods and pocket knives.  Not all recovered property has been identified, and obviously not every recent car break-in has been solved.  Any recent victims from the mentioned areas might want to check with their own local law enforcement agencies and have them contact Sgt. Rick Bucheit to determine if some of their property might have been recovered.

Sheriff Jones is quite proud of the results of this investigation.  “These ‘kids’ were hitting 20-30 cars a night all over the tri-state area for quite a while,” said the Sheriff.  “I guess they thought it was it was pretty easy.  But you know, committing crimes in Butler County usually catches up to you sooner or later.  We have just proved that again.”
