Service Area & 9-1-1 Call Routing

Butler County, Ohio is home to numerous cities, villages and townships. Each of these governments have their own political and geographic boundaries, and most have separate fire, emergency, and law enforcement agencies.

These multiple political and geographic boundaries have a direct bearing on how the Butler County 911 system works, especially when a call to 911 is made from a cell phone. That’s because cellular calls are often not automatically routed to the proper Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) because the wireless signals travel beyond municipal boundary lines. In many cases, a 911 caller may need to be transferred to the proper agency in the area. That is why it is imperative that anyone who calls 911 from a cell phone tells the dispatcher exactly where he or she is, and, if possible, what city/community the call concerns.

Who will answer my emergency call?

If you are within the service area of our center and call 9-1-1 from a land-line telephone, it will normally ring to BCSO dispatchers who will directly handle your request for law enforcement, fire or EMS services.

If you call 9-1-1 from a wireless phone, your call routing will depend on the tower your call passes through. You may be answered by another dispatch center from a nearby area, who will need to transfer you to the appropriate center. It is very important to provide accurate and complete location information to the dispatcher, including the city, village or township where your address is located.

When to Call 9-1-1

You should only call 9-1-1 in EMERGENCIES – when you or someone else is seriously hurt or is experiencing life-threatening conditions. An emergency is any situation that requires the immediate assistance of a law enforcement officer, firefighter or emergency medical services. If you’re in doubt: It’s better to be safe and let the 9-1-1 call-taker determine if you need assistance rather than possibly put someone’s life at risk by not taking action.

If you need to report a non-emergency issue, call (513) 785-1300.
